9/4/22 Week at a Glance

Hi Team,

If this is your first WAG (week at a glance), welcome! This is an overview of everything going on with the team for the week and things to look for in the future. If you have questions, please ask any of the board members! We have loved seeing you all at lessons or at our Boba social today. We are so happy lessons have kicked off and we have had stellar attendance with 122 people at the lesson on Thursday! We have also passed out more than 2,000 fliers to people which is AMAZING! I am so proud of all of you for helping us achieve such good attendance.

Special Announcements for Everyone:

  • Showcases: Oh yeah it’s that time of year again. Showcases will be happening on Sept 15th, 22nd, and 29th at our newcomer lessons which are from 9-11 pm at the CCRB. All returners are welcome to do a showcase and show our newcomers what dancing is all about! Please fill out this form if you are interested in doing a showcase so we can gauge how many we will have.
  • Partner Search: We will be having a partner search (one of two this semester) on September 6th from 9-11 pm in the CCRB. This is perfect if you want to try out or go to any of the upcoming competitions in October. If you can’t make it to the event the official fall 22 partner search sheet can be found here! Please let us know if you need help.
  • Guided Practice: Trying out or just need some extra help? We are reserving our Tuesday CCRB space for guided practices beginning on Sept 13th from 9-11 pm. These will end beginning in October so please take advantage of them while you can. If you are not on A team it is highly recommended you attend these instead of DTS on Tuesdays while they are occurring.
  • Michcomp Committee: Interested in getting more involved with the team? Fill out this form to join our Michcomp committee! It is due by Sept 29th. If you have any questions please reach out to Ray or Luna.
  • OSU Competition: Amy recently sent out Rooms, Rides, and Registration for the OSU comp on Saturday, October 8th. If you would like to go to this competition but didn’t get the email or have questions please reach out to ballroom-exec@umich.edu. Also, you must pay dues before the competition. Dues will be due on Sept 30th for those who are not trying out to be on an upper-level team so this shouldn’t be an issue but if you need accommodations please let us know ASAP.
  • DTS Etiquette: There will be chores so please if you use the space, do a chore. Otherwise, the board has to stay late and clean up after everyone. Also, DO NOT ARRIVE EARLY! This is the one time I will tell you this. Do not arrive at DTS early as there are classes happening before us and it is super awkward if you bust in early. If you are new to DTS ask the board member there that night for a quick intro to the space. We will be holding an official welcome to DTS night in October.
  • Tryouts!!!: Tryouts will be held on September 17th from 1-4 pm in the CCRB. If you are trying out dues are due on Sept 14th, unless prior accommodations are made with Jason and the Board. Please be at tryouts starting at 1:30 at the latest so you have time to warm up and change. We have the space starting at 1 so you can arrive early and practice in your costumes. There will be a form sent out later this week with additional details including the mandatory essay section detailing why you want to be on a competitive international team and what you would bring to the team, so keep that in mind. If you are new, don’t worry about tryouts this semester but if you have questions reach out to the board and we can answer any you may have.
  • Team Closet: If you are trying out and need to borrow items from the team closet, reach out to Luna at lune@umich.edu to coordinate what you need and a pickup time and location.
  • Dues: Dues are $65 for current students. This gets you two lessons a week plus practice space 4 times a week. If you are interested in paying dues they may be paid through venmo to @UMBDT, PayPal at ballroom-exec@umich.edu (MUST BE FRIENDS AND FAMILY), or exact cash to Jason. Please always include your uniqname and first and last name. If you are not a current student and are a recent alum (in the last year) and want to use our space, please reach out to me or Jason.
