Another throwback to OSB ft. Steve and Susan!!
Hi Team,
Get hype for OSB, we’ve got less than two weeks to go!! Read on for lots more info on the competition, as well as all things ballroom coming up this week…
- SAPAC Training: Our team will be participating in virtual SAPAC training on bystander intervention on Tuesday at 9:30 pm! This training is mandatory for all team members!! Here is the zoom link for the training. If you are unnable to attend the SAPAC training please email Manasi (manasia@umich.edu) so that we can schedule a make-up opportunity.
- Ballroom Buddies: Sign up for both newcomers and returning team members can be found here and the deadline to sign up is Tuesday (11/9) at 11.59pm! Questions about ballroom buddies? Ask your wonderful Recruitment Chair Tiffany (tiffle)!
- Poster Making Social: Join the UMBDT for a poster making social from 9:00-10:00 pm on Wednesday (11/10) in Mason Hall 2449! This is a great chance to hang out with your new ballroom buddies and make some fun posters that we can use to cheer on our team at OSB :)
- Rounds: This week we will be hosting orounds leading up to Purdue during the normal newcomer review lesson time (9-11 pm) in the CCRB! During rounds we will go through each of the dances in all 4 styles, just like we will at a competition. We’ll practice walking onto the floor, and dancing for a whole ’round’ (~1.5 min of music) with everyone in your heat on the floor at the same time. During this time you can work on moving around the room to make sure your number can be seen by judges standing around the floor, as well as practice doing moves all on your own without the structure of a set routine (like we did today during lesson!). Wearing costumes and your dance shoes at rounds is encouraged so you can get a feel for what it will be like to dance at the competition! Can’t make rounds this week? No worries, we will be doing them again next Thursday before OSB :)
- Final call for Registration/Rooms and Rides/Payment! Rooms and Rides was due last Friday, so if you have not filled out the form please do so ASAP. Here’s the link to Rooms and Rides, each person in a partnership needs to fill out R&R separately so we can organize rides to the competition and hotel rooms! Registration for OSB and payment of the registration fee are both due on 11/11! Here’s the link to the OSB registtration site, remember you can sign up for up to 8 dances, and we highly encourage everyone to dance as much as possible!! If you have questions about what dances to sign up for ask a board member this week and we will be happy to help :) Registration fees are $80 for returning members, $40 if you are a new team member and can be paid in one of the following ways:
- Venmo to @UMBDT (preferred)
- Check: made out to “Ballroom Dance Team”, give to any board member
- Cash: give to any board member, be sure to get an email receipt
- PayPal: friends and family to ballroom-exec@umich.edu, expect a fee
of ~3% if you haven’t linked your bank account
Please don’t be a jerk and make Lauren and Liam chase you down!
- Competition packing list: Check out our competition preparation list to find out what costumes and other items you need to bring to the competition!
- Team closet: If you don’t own all the costume items listed in the competition preparation list, don’t worry! The team closet contains many leotards, skirts and dresses you can borrow for OSB! There is also a limited amount of men’s competition gear available to borrow which is not listed on the closet page, contact Tiffany (tiffle) for more details. Lots of people on the team have spare competition items so you can also try asking someone at newcomer lesson or posting in the team Facebook group if you’re looking for things to borrow.
- Costume rules: The costuming rules for OSB are a little different than for other competitions, so if you are dancing Pre-Bronze, Bronze or Silver please read this extract from the rulebook: There are no costumes allowed in Newcomer, Bronze or Silver. No reflective material, sequins, rhinestones, etc. Fringe is fine. No jewelry with light reflective qualities, including earrings necklaces, bracelets, etc. No gloves or floats.
- TBA dancing: If you’re a lead, you can win extra points for the team by dancing two extra events with a girl from another school who doesn’t have a partner (in addition to the eight events you’ll be dancing with your partner from Michigan). Lauren will be coordinating TBA dancers at OSB, so please reach out to her (molloylg@umich.edu) if you have any questions or are interested in dancing TBA.
- Join the Team GroupMe: Use this link to join our team GroupMe! The GroupMe is a great way to stay connect with the team, especially at big competitions like OSB so that we can provide live updates on everything going on throughout the day!
- Partner search: Check out the partner search document if you are still looking for someone to practice or attend competitions with this semester!
