3/10/24 Week at a Glance

Hi Team,

Welcome back to the 8th edition of your 2024 WAG. I spent some time trying to think of something creative to say but I’ma keep it real I couldn’t think of anything so yeah. Announcements! Yay!

Announcements for Everyone:

  • MichComp Advertising: Advertising Assignments are coming out today for upper level team members! YOU MUST VISIT ALL YOUR ASSIGNED BUSINESSES BY 3/16. If you would like to advertise for us and aren’t on an upper level team, message Nate at nhodgson@umich.edu
  • MichComp Shout-Outs: Shout-outs are a great way to support your friends on the team, or for your friends and family to support you! A shout-out is a special message (with or without an image) in the MichComp program for members of our team. They cost $20/shout-out. Fill out this form to order one (or send it to someone who can order one for you)!
  • MichComp Registration: The form for registration for MichComp is due THIS FRIDAY! More details in Rachel’s email.
  • St. Patrick’s Day at DTS!: Come to DTS wearing green on Wednesday or do the double length jive, your choice!
  • SAPAC Make-up: The deadline for SAPAC make-up has passed so if you haven’t filled it out make sure to do so or contact akilian@umich.edu. Otherwise you won’t be permitted to attend our social events or compete with us.
  • Flashmob!: Last year we did a flashmob to promote MichComp! We learn a choreography together and perform it on the Diag on a sunny day. Fill out this form if you are potentially interested (don’t worry it’s not binding). 
  • Pie Baking / Board Game Social: Your wonderful team pie baker and tech chair will be hosting a Pie Baking class and Board Game event. Please fill out this form if you’re interested! 
  • Meet the B Team: Scroll down or check our socials (@michiganballroom) to meet are wonderful B(ombastic) team!
  • Partner Search Spreadsheet: If you are looking for a partner, we have a spreadsheet open! Please put your information down if you are interested in finding a partner, but it is UP TO YOU to contact someone else on the spreadsheet if you think you could be a good match!  
  • Liability Waiver: We are now requiring all team members to sign this liability waiver. Members must sign this to attend any competitions or parties. If you have any questions or concerns, email ballroomexec@umich.edu.
  • MichComp Free Housing Host: If you have any amount of floor space (even just enough for one person) in your house/apartment/dorm please fill out this form.
  • Practice Space Schedule: The spreadsheet for space availability can be found here.

Second up we have our amazing B(ombastic) team!

Alan Zhang and Andrea Vargas

Alan is a junior studying computer science. This is his fourth semester on the team. His favorite dance is the Samba. 

Andrea is in her sixth semester on the team. She is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. Her favorite dance is salsa on 1, and she’s been asked for directions in every country she’s ever visited.

Owen Hoffend and Reiah Jaffer

Owen is a graduate student studying computer science and engineering. He is in his sixth semester on the team, and his favorite dances (right now) are International Rumba and Smooth Foxtrot. He once handed out lettuce to children on Halloween in New Zealand.

Reiah is a sophomore majoring in psychology with a minor in astronomy. She has been on the team for three semesters, and her favorite dance is the International Rumba.

Gerardo Sierra Reyes and Andrea Hassig

This is Gerardo’s fourth semester on the team. He is a junior studying mechanical engineering, and his favorite dance is the International Rumba. He loves Rumba so much that he does Rumba Cucarachas without noticing when he’s talking to people (it’s bad).

Andrea is in her third semester on the team. She is a junior studying economics and EEB (ecology and evolutionary biodiversity). Her favorite dance is Latin Cha-Cha, and she loves scuba diving!

Joshua Velten and Rachel Leonard

Joshua is a junior majoring in computer science. This is his fourth semester on the team, and his favorite dance is the International Rumba. 

Rachel is a sophomore studying actuarial mathematics. She is also in her fourth semester on the team, and her favorite dance is the International Rumba. Josh currently owes her 10 Domino’s pizzas.

Som Sadashiv Phene and Ava Renfer

Som is pursuing a PhD in the mathematics department under advisors Prof. Daniel Burns and Prof. Leopoldo Pando Zayas (physics). He has been on the team for 5 semesters, and his favorite dance is calculus. Every morning he dances to his own heartbeat.

Ava is currently in her sixth semester on the team. She is a junior studying communication and media. Her favorite dance is the Tango.

Miguel Retto and Tola Kilian

Miguel is a junior in his fifth semester on the team. He is majoring in industrial and operations engineering and has a minor in music. His favorite dance is the Smooth Foxtrot, and he lives on a ski mountain and has been skiing since he could walk!

Tola is a senior studying both biopsychology, cognition & neuroscience and classical archaeology. She has been on the team for five semesters, and her favorite dance is the international cha cha. She has lived in six different countries on four different continents so far.
